The Intern Reporter is responsible for assisting in news coverage by researching, writing, and contributing to news stories under the guidance of the editorial team at the Western Standard.
This internship provides hands-on experience in journalism, allowing interns to develop their reporting, writing, and analytical skills in a fast-paced news environment.
Interns will be based out of the Calgary headquarters. This is not a remote position.
Reporting and Parameters - The Intern Reporter reports directly to the News Editor and will receive regular feedback on their work.
Major Duties and Responsibilities - Assist in writing news articles and short-form reports with guidance from editors. Conduct research, interviews, and fact-checking to support news coverage.
- Learn and apply the Editorial Principles, Style Guide, and Company Values of the Western Standard. Work on assigned projects, including gathering quotes, summarizing key issues, or assisting in investigative work.
- Monitor and stay informed on current events relevant to the publication’s readership. Participate in weekly editorial meetings to gain insights into newsroom operations.
- Maintain a professional approach to social media and online engagement.
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a journalism, communications, or related program (preferred but not required).
- Strong writing skills and a passion for journalism. Some experience in reporting, writing, or digital media (e.g., school newspaper, blog, freelance work).
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines.
- Strong research and communication skills.
- A self-starter who takes initiative and is eager to learn.
