Description

Moose Media is looking to find the next person to lead the newsroom of Moose FM and Energeticcity.ca.  You’ll oversee a team of reporters focused on Fort St. John, B.C. and the rest of Northeast B.C.

Moose Media owns and operates the local radio station Moose FM and the local news site Energeticcity.ca.  Together, the radio station and website are community leaders in news coverage and operate the largest newsroom in Northeast B.C.

This role requires a keen understanding of current events, the ability to make quick and accurate editorial decisions, especially during breaking news, and the skill to edit and refine news stories. The News Editor is also responsible for guiding a team of reporters, ensuring that content is informative, engaging, and aligns with the digital media strategies pertinent to Moose Media’s audience.

Moose Media is a locally owned and operated media company in Fort St. John, which gives us the freedom to create the best content possible for our community.  While other newsrooms in the industry are shrinking, we have grown our team by tripling the size of our newsroom since 2020, and we don’t plan to stop there.

Duties include
  • Collaborate closely with the Program Director for Moose FM to oversee the production radio newscasts and other news programming like our weekly talk show.
  • Run daily editorial meetings and assign stories throughout the day.
  • Oversee, edit and proof our stories for Energeticcity.ca.
  • Fostering a newsroom culture that is agile and responsive, capable of quickly mobilizing resources to cover breaking news and developing stories, thereby keeping our audience informed in real-time.
  • Help create extra news coverage for special events like elections and community meetings.
  • Train, coach, and mentor all news staff.
  • Cover meetings, local events, and seasonal activities/beat as schedule allows.
  • Work on-call as needed for breaking news.
  • Streamline news processes for efficient newsroom workflow and training.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • You will need several years of experience in journalism with a significant portion of that time spent in news reporting or editing. Previous experience in a management/leadership role would be considered an asset.
  • Experience with website content management systems.
  • Experience in overseeing the creation and curation of news content, including written articles, video, and podcasts will be considered an asset.
  • Understanding digital media trends, SEO, social media, and multimedia journalism is crucial to this role.
  • Must be social media and computer savvy.
  • Valid driver's licence and vehicle.

An annual salary of $50,000 to $65,000 depending on previous experience.

The deadline to apply is December 6, 2024. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
