Description
Metroland is currently recruiting for an experienced court reporter to focus on stories about crime, courts and justice throughout its Ontario footprint. This is a full-time, permanent position.
There is a preferred candidate: a hard-working person who thrives in a fast-paced, chaotic environment and yet excels at creating order in their duties and deadlines. Crime, court and justice stories are their passion. They demonstrate a firm grasp of the workings of Canada’s criminal court system as it relates to journalism and possess a proven track record for telling stories in a way that resonates with readers.
The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues and think beyond traditional narratives to produce accurate, comprehensive, compelling and relevant stories, while staying firmly connected to Metroland’s principles and commitment to quality journalism.

Qualifications
- You have a diploma or degree in journalism or in a related field.
- You have 5+ years of professional experience as a reporter.
- Your previous experience includes court, crime and justice reporting.
- You have excellent news judgment, writing skills and storytelling ability.
- You love a deadline and excel in a fast-paced, demanding yet creative environment.
- You can simultaneously manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- You can develop and maintain contacts and sources, skillfully interview people in often highly charged situations and demonstrate resourcefulness.
- You’re a self-starter able to generate unique and compelling story ideas, but also a team player who loves to collaborate and is easily assignable.
- You are well-versed in Canadian libel law.
- You have knowledge of Canadian Press style.
- You can work remotely and be able to attend court in person, if necessary.
