Description

Playback (playbackonline.ca), the foremost authority on the Canadian TV and film industry, is looking for a staff writer to join our Toronto-based team.

Playback publishes up-to-the-minute screen industry news and analysis for its readership on its website, playbackonline.ca, and via Playback Daily, its subscription newsletter aimed at the Canadian screen industry. Playback also publishes two print magazines a year.

We're looking for an enterprising journalist to develop and contribute stories to our daily and magazine. If you know how to apply a business lens to identify the issues, trends and ideas that would be most relevant to entertainment industry readers, and have a tenacious appetite for uncovering and breaking news, we want to hear from you.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to learn about the inner-workings of the film and TV sector and become entrenched within it while covering major industry events, such as the Canadian Screen Awards and the Toronto International Film Festival. Playback staff members also have the opportunity to contribute to the Banff World Media Festival, a market-leading conference and festival dedicated to global television, film and digital content held annually in Banff, Alta., in June.

Playback currently operates in a hybrid model, splitting our time between working from home and in our downtown Toronto office. Interested candidates must be able work in-office, in Toronto twice a week.

Responsibilities:
  • Write two to three relevant, interesting and timely news stories per day.
  • Upload your stories to Wordpress, craft display copy and source appropriate images.
  • Balance a daily story load with longer-term strategic planning to develop more in-depth features and trend pieces.
  • Form relationships with industry contacts, hunt down scoops and secure exclusives.
  • Monitor competitive and non-competitive news outlets for news and trends.
  • Produce clean copy in a timely manner.
  • Maintain and grow the Playback audience and act as a brand ambassador.
  • Help manage Playback’s social channels.
  • Attend industry or Brunico events, which often occur after normal work hours.
  • Cultivate a reputation for accuracy, persistence and an analytic approach in your work.

Qualifications

  • One year of experience in a writing role at a newspaper or magazine
  • Post-secondary studies in journalism, media, communications, film, TV or related field
  • Experience with business journalism is not required but would be considered an asset, as would a strong interest in writing about the business side of TV and film
  • Adept at using CP Style, with an eye for detail and copy consistency
  • Proven understanding of journalistic standards and practices
  • Superlative time-management and organizational skills
  • Experience and comfort with establishing and maintaining key editorial relationships with exec-level contacts
  • Team player attitude and comfortable working on a small editorial team
  • Strong editorial standards and sound news judgment
  • Inside knowledge of the film and television industry would be an asset
  • Ability to edit video is an asset
  • Ability to travel within Canada, as needed
