Canadian Affairs is seeking a full-time, early-career journalist to join our small and dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have strong news judgment, superior reporting and writing skills and an enterprising spirit. The successful candidate will be passionate about helping Canadian Affairs build a reputation as a go-to source of high-quality journalism.

About Canadian Affairs
Canadian Affairs is a subscription-based, nationally focused digital newspaper that launched July 1, 2023. Canadian Affairs’ mission is to deliver high-quality journalism on undercovered topics that matter to the lives and livelihoods of Canadian families and professionals. 

Canadian Affairs primarily publishes reported journalism on the following topics: family and child wellness; religion and community; consumer matters; the regulated professions; energy and the environment; business and the economy. 

Canadian Affairs is headquartered in Toronto but operates virtually. The founding team includes Publisher and Editor Lauren Heuser, Managing Editor Julie Carl and several early-career journalists. Canadian Affairs cultivates close-knit work relationships and a positive team dynamic through daily virtual meetings and periodic in-person meetings. 

The Role
The successful candidate will be instrumental in helping establish Canadian Affairs’ reputation as a source of high quality, original and impactful journalism. The journalist will:
  • Pitch, report and write multiple news stories each week and work on features as time permits;
  • Develop sources that facilitate the production of original, groundbreaking and compelling stories; 
  • Develop expertise in one or two beats;
  • Prepare newswire stories for publication;
  • Use social media and newsletters to disseminate news stories and build awareness of Canadian Affairs’ brand and content.
While this is a remote position, we are seeking candidates who are based in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba.


The successful candidate will have the following experience, education and competencies: 
Experience and Education:
  • Up to five yearsʼ experience working as a journalist;
  • Proven ability to generate compelling, original stories for a news platform;
  • Experience in developing, maintaining and leveraging sources;
  • Experience working independently and as part of a team and incorporating feedback;
  • Post-secondary education in journalism, political science, economics or a related field (preferred but not required);
  • An engaged presence on social media (preferred but not required).
Key Competencies: 
  • Solid news judgment and superior research and reporting skills;
  • Clear and concise communicator who is attentive to audience needs;
  • Photography skills a strong plus;
  • Big-picture thinker capable of identifying trends, patterns or story lines, while also taking care of details and accuracy;
  • Adept at building and maintaining relationships;
  • Resourceful, entrepreneurial and reliable.

Start Date: An October start date is preferred

Hours: Full-time 

Compensation: Based on qualifications and years of experience
