St. Croix Courier, located in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, a division of Advocate Printing & Publishing, is seeking an experienced and talented individual to join our team as Editor. The editor leads and manages the planning, production, and presentation of news. The editor supervises the newsroom staff and reports to the senior editor, working in cooperation with com­pany leadership and staff to support the company mission. 

The editor has the responsibility for, and understanding of, reporting practices, news planning, editing and production. The editor ensures that all journalism conforms to Canadian Press Style and reporting practices, and company policies, meeting all ethical, editorial, creative, and technical standards for news coverage. The editor is responsible for maintaining journalistic integrity and responding to community queries and concerns.

Editorial Planning, Scheduling, Editing
  • Directs the activities of the news team to develop story ideas, manage ongoing coverage, assign stories, schedule stories for publication, and schedule time for interviewing, writing, and editing as necessary.
  • Gives the news team regular constructive feedback on writing, reporting, and CP Style.
  • Serves as a primary editor to ensure news stories and social media posts are published on schedule and in keeping with company standards.
  • Must be active in the community, constantly working to understand its challenges.
  • Must be a team builder and leader, able to guide the editorial team while liaising professionally with sales and production departments.
  • Is part of the news team, contributing stories as needed for every issue.
  • Is familiar with social media and web posting, responsible for promoting the newspaper's content on social media and ensuring stories are promptly published on the website
  • May sometimes be called upon to contribute to other publications.
Administration of Personnel, Budget, Technology
  • Helps set goals and monitor scheduling and performance of news personnel. Personnel management may include recruitment and hiring.
  • Manages the news department budget — including annual planning, monthly monitoring, and routine supervision.


  • Degree in journalism or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of three year's full-time professional experience in journalism, in a multi-platform (newspaper, web, social media) news environment.
  • Broad knowledge of local and regional issues.
  • Keen understanding of CP Style and reporting practices.
  • Strong interest in current events and the ability to work within a deadline-driven news environment.
  • Experience in news writing and edit­ing and must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Social media savvy, excellent memory for details, and ability to meet deadlines under stressful conditions and effectively manage a team.
