Black Press Media is looking for journalists who can write fearlessly about community issues and have a passion for hyperlocal storytelling to join our network of award-winning news teams.
Successful candidates will be joining some of our network's most competitive and well-read local media platforms to report online daily, as well as for weekly print publications.
Junior and mid-level reporting positions in our newsrooms across Western Canada are open for eager applicants.

Duties and responsibilities include:
  • Producing quality articles and videos.
  • Writing on deadlines assigned by an editor if applicable, as well as pitching locally-interesting stories on a regular basis.
  • Covering breaking news quickly, as defined by Black Press Media's editorial strategy and guidelines.
  • Build a network of sources that provide news tips to supplement day-to-day news cycle storytelling.
  • Participating in regular training to become the best journalist possible.
Positions include for publications in the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Cariboo, Okanagan, Kootenay and northern coastal regions of B.C.

Applicants must be able to legally work in Canada and hold a valid driver's licence. A reliable vehicle is required.


We are looking for journalists of all skillsets and focuses to join our network. We have a thorough onboarding process out of our Surrey-based headquarters, with custom training that ensures reporters are setup for success before landing in a newsroom.
Attributes of a successful applicant include:  
  • Passion for community journalism and hyperlocal storytelling.
  • The ability to adhere to deadlines and take direction while contributing original story ideas.
  • Knowledge of iMovie and Canadian Press style.
  • A formal journalism degree or diploma.
  • Eagerness to learn from surrounding experienced editors and reporters.
  • Thorough understanding of social media, photography, video and print journalism. Broadcast experience is an asset.
  • Experience in driving a sense of urgency for coverage of breaking news online.
  • Initiative and determination to continuously improve writing skillsets – able to recognize journalism is a craft that must be constantly maintained.
  • Able to take criticism from editors and peers during the editing process.
