Location: Mississauga, Ontario
Posted: May 7, 2022
Deadline: July 7, 2022
With its 70 weekly publications, six daily newspapers and 25-plus websites, Metroland Media is the source of news and information in communities across Ontario.
Our roots run deep. In some communities, our newspapers have been keeping residents informed on issues that impact their lives for more than 100 years. From Niagara to Ottawa Valley, North Bay to Toronto and dozens of regions in between, our journalists are focused on informing readers about local government, education, health care, crime and community events.
Metroland Media, which is owned by Torstar, is committed to addressing a deficiency in news coverage of and for Indigenous people in Ontario. We have established an Indigenous Awareness and Action subcommittee of our Diversity and Inclusion committee, with the goal of making meaningful connections in Indigenous communities to educate our editorial team and our communities as a whole.
We continue to evolve, grow and change with our readers and our communities. We invest in trained journalists and offer ongoing educational opportunities to remain current with media trends and readers’ needs. We fuse their expertise with first-party data and insight from our local community advisory council to inform our coverage.
Metroland is looking for an enthusiastic and curious post-secondary Indigenous student or recent graduate with a strong work ethic, positive attitude, passion for storytelling and interest in community journalism.
During their eight-week summer position, the successful candidate will gain experience working in a community newsroom and learn the value of information, whether the issue is large or small, and the connection between what is being reported on and our readers.
They will use their reporting and researching skills to produce engaging content for print, web and social media, with a focus on Indigenous Peoples and communities. Coverage could include profiles of individuals and their accomplishments; stories on health, social, economic and infrastructure issues facing local communities; and information pieces that will serve to educate our readers.
You are a motivated self-starter with insatiable curiosity and an appetite for information. You are eager to learn and share your knowledge with others. You can bring together information and ideas to produce straightforward yet compelling text and create eye-catching photos.
You are organized, can prioritize tasks appropriately and manage your time effectively. You’re a team-oriented individual who can build professional relationships with team members and the community. You can work remotely and travel within the community for assignments.
Preference will be given to candidates who are Indigenous or have experience working within Indigenous communities. Candidates are asked to self-identify as First Nations, Inuit, or Métis in their cover letter.
