Location: Valemount, British Columbia
Posted: August 30, 2021
Salary: $46,000

The full-time editor/reporter researches, writes and curates content for Rocky Mountain Goat Media platforms, both online and in a weekly print newspaper that serves roughly 5,000 people in East-Central B.C.

The Rocky Mountain Goat is independent and locally-owned and has won many awards for all-round newspaper excellence, as well as its writing, photography and ad design. We value quality as much as quantity.

Valemount is a thriving mountain town and the gateway to Mt Robson Provincial Park and beyond that Jasper National Park. It is surrounded by snow-capped mountains that are a ski and snowmobiling heaven in the winter and offer endless hiking/biking trails in the summer.

Valemount is a hub of locally-owned niche businesses including a micro-brewery, coffee roastery, unique coffee shops, a food truck, and many artisans to name a few. The friendly, volunteer-minded communities in the Robson Valley put on many events and festivals throughout the year. Combined with stunning scenery, this is a place that attracts people from all over the world to both visit and call home.

We are looking for someone who is a great writer and good photographer. Someone who knows how to engage an audience quickly and efficiently and distill complicated information to the essentials. But also someone who understands the fundamentals of storytelling and how to use them. The editor will be responsible for about 5-7 stories/briefs/stand-alone photos as well as an editorial each week. Breaking news stories are posted immediately to our website with a more researched version printed in the next print paper. As a weekly newspaper, our niche is in exclusive features and in-depth reporting, which can’t easily be replicated or scooped online. The editor will be responsible for staying on top of news and features and managing the content pipeline each week, both for themselves and for the other contributors. The job entails proofreading everything in the paper and coming up with captions, teasers and fillers. Through this job, the editor will become an authority on local issues and sought after as a source f up-to-date information by both locals and newcomers.
