The Medicine Hat News has an immediate opening for a full-time, term reporter with a focus on education and agriculture.
The ideal candidate will be a motivated journalist with a strong news sense, excellent research skills, a creative approach to coverage, a desire to learn and a demonstrated ability to adapt to rapidly changing situations. This contract position is scheduled to end March 31, 2022 – however the opportunity for future employment exists for the right person.
The Medicine Hat News is a member of the Alberta Newspaper Group LP and has operated as a daily newspaper since 1885, providing award winning daily coverage from court and councils to sports and human interest.
Reporting on local stories through print and photography, with a focus on agriculture and education; creating content for our social media platforms; pitching story ideas with an emphasis on local content; photography & ability to work evenings and weekends.
- Daily or weekly newspaper experience
- Working knowledge of C.P.style
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Exceptional interpersonal skills
- Works independently and meets deadlines
- Strong sense of ethical integrity
- Fluency in social media
- Eager to take initiative
- Willingness to work flexible hours
- Photography / layout experience an asset
This full-time, term position is a unionized position with pay based on collective agreement. The successful candidate will be eligible for enrollment in the company benefits program, including extended health, life insurance, dental, eye care, LTD and optional participation in a defined contribution pension plan. Paid vacations will accrue at two weeks per year.
