The Western Communications team provides strategic advice to university senior leadership, faculty, staff and teams of internal and external communications staff across Western in order to build the university’s brand on a local, national and global scale.
Reporting to the Executive Director, Editorial Strategy and Media Relations, the Associate Director, Media Relations will play a strategic role in designing, implementing and managing media relations efforts that positively position Western locally, nationally and internationally
The Associate Director, Media Relations will develop and execute proactive media relations strategies that promote and enhance Western’s reputation, and that strengthen its brand in alignment with the University’s strategic vision. In addition, this role will liaise with, and provide media relations guidance to various leaders across campus.
This position will also provide strategic and integrated leadership to staff, while articulating a clear vision which supports and empowers staff to excel.
The ideal candidate has an undergraduate degree in journalism, public relations, communications, or related field, with seven years’ experience in media relations, delivering strategic content to a range of audiences via diverse channels on behalf of a publicly visible organization.
You have in-depth knowledge of theory and best practices in media relations; familiarity with the current media landscape in Canada; awareness of international media markets; and proven leadership skills to guide and develop a dynamic and successful team.
Exceptional media and editing skills and solid communications judgment are critical, allowing you to present and package information to maximize interest.
You have a demonstrated ability to collaborate with various stakeholders, and successfully lead and manage projects within budget and timelines.
