Located in Treaty 6 Territory and the traditional homelands of the Dakota and of the Metis, The Prince Albert Daily Herald has an immediate opening for a journalist under for a one-year term under Canada's Local Journalism Initiative Program. Reporting to the editor, this reporter will report critically on local institutions such as city and regional councils, school boards and post-secondary institutions while also providing the latest education news in the region.
 
While the reporter will take the lead on certain civic issues and on topics of interest across multiple governance bodies in the region, they will also receive support from the existing civic affairs reporting conducted by the Herald newsroom.
 
The successful candidate must be a self-starter passionate about local news able to keep up in a fast-paced newsroom. As we are a daily publication, reporters are expected to produce two stories per day.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have:
  • a journalism degree or diploma or equivalent experience
  • a driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • a keen eye for detail and understanding of CP style
  • experience using digital tools to gather and report on stories and a familiarity with wordpress and social media sites
  • a proven ability to write accurate stories to deadline in a fast-paced environment.
  • The ability to handle sensitive stories is an asset
  • The ability to take photos to accompany stories is a strong asset
Knowledge of the general role and jurisdiction of local governments is a strong asset, as this position will require reporting on local government bodies.
