Squall Inc. is an online news publisher that started up in 2001.  It has a roster of freelance reporters across Canada plus a full-time editorial and sales team who have always worked from home at various locations across the country.  Squall has two publications the Real Estate News Exchange (RENX.ca), its original news service, and Sustainable Biz Canada (Sustainablebiz.ca) which was launched more recently.

Sustainable Biz Canada (SBC) readers are primarily business professionals with an interest in sustainability and engaged in any sector of the Canadian economy.  It is focused on reporting about Canadian companies contributing to the development of a more sustainable economy through the implementation of environmental, social, and governance initiatives as well as innovative strategies, products, and services.  


As the sister website to RENX.ca, SBC’s content currently targets readership from the commercial real estate industry.

The role of a business news reporter at Sustainable Biz Canada is an opportunity to build a writing career in this sector.  The position is expected to expand considerably over the next 12 months.  There may be other writing and editorial responsibilities available to a motivated candidate for the job.

  • Write two to four news pieces every week 700-900 words and more shorter pieces.
  • Conduct interviews, attend meetings, take photos as required.
  • Produce succinct, clear, and accurate copy on deadline.
  • Identify and pitch engaging and news worthy story ideas.


  • A strong interest in the contribution business is making to the transition to a more sustainable economy
  • 3+ years business news reporting experience
  • Knowledge of ESG activities and practices of Canadian public and private corporations
  • Background on business sustainability initiatives taken by Canadian companies
  • Journalism degree or diploma, or commensurate experience, with no degree/diploma
  • Mastery of CP style, detail-orientedGood people skills and a team player 
  • Strong adherence to journalistic ethics
  • Ability to write accurate and fair stories while respecting tight deadlines
