Freelance Writer, News-Current Affairs-Sports
Torstar Local is looking for freelance writers who live in the Kingston area to produce stories on a contract basis for news and community bulletin board app The Kingston Local.
What you will do:
  • Research and write five to 10 news and feature stories per week
  • Topics can include police, municipal, transportation, health, community, family, real estate, business, people, sports, and events
  • Attend some public meetings and events
  • Conduct interviews on the phone or in person
  • Take photos when necessary
  • Produce succinct, clear, and accurate copy on deadline


Ideal requisites include:
  • a degree or diploma in journalism, applied arts or communications
  • a razor-sharp command of English
  • efficient research, interview, photography and writing skills
  • an aptitude for news judgement
  • knowledge of the region’s background
  • a personable, confident and curious nature
  • a passion for understanding the issues facing the community today
  • a flair for story-telling 
Some media experience is preferred.
