Description

  • Act as assignment editor for Benefitscanada.com, leading the production of the daily newsletter — assigning and editing an average of four stories per day.
  • Contribute to online content, including writing online news stories.
  • Write one or two features per month for the print magazine.
  • Edit content for Benefits Canada, as second line, and contribute to production process for monthly issue.
  • Contribute feature ideas for Benefits Canada and in-depth story ideas for the website.
  • Manage Expert Panel — stay in touch with expert panelists, assigning deadlines and editing pieces as they come in (one per week).
  • Mentor and train new staff on processes and editorial needs while ensuring consistent raising of editorial standards by providing feedback, a critical eye and guidance; able to shape and polish not only his/her own work but also that of staff writers/freelancers.
  • Work with freelancers to fill editorial needs as required.
  • Attend events, including Benefits Canada’s own events/conferences, and network with industry professionals in order to gain insights that will raise the level of editorial quality.
  • Show leadership on special projects such as editorial best practices meetings and assisting with annual Workplace Benefits Awards.
  • Handle housekeeping and administrative duties, such as minor website changes and posting of the monthly issue online.

 

Qualifications

  • A graduate of journalism school an asset, but not essential.
  • More than five years of writing experience, in both print and online.
  • Between three and five years of editing experience, both copy and substantive editing.
  • Knowledge of the financial services industry, including pensions and investments, would be an asset.
  • Experience using Incopy/InDesign and a CMS platform, such as WordPress.
  • Strong organizational skills, with a strong attention to detail and a willingness to take initiative.
