Communications and Media Specialist - James Lorimer & Company Ltd.
 
James Lorimer & Company publishes books that inform and connect Canadians on a variety of important and timely issues including Canadian politics, economics, the environment, and social issues. We are seeking a communications and media specialist with a personal interest in the key issues of the day and extensive knowledge — and contacts within — Canadian media in all its forms. The communications specialist champions books, authors, and the importance of Canadian issues across all forms of media.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this position
 
  • Has extensive knowledge of media across the country and contacts with key players
  • Follows news and issues across a variety of Canadian media — including radio, print, magazines, podcasts, and online
  • Has a good sense of what is newsworthy both nationally and locally across the country and has the ability to make connections between what’s being talked about in the news and the books and authors they are pitching
  • Has excellent written and verbal communications skills — the ability to write clear concise copy and to speak confidently and accurately about the subjects they are pitching
  • Reads Canadian non-fiction and has an interest in Canadian politics and current affairs
  • Is able to juggle multiple projects and can re-prioritize projects as new opportunities arise
  • Is a critical and creative thinker, is energetic, and can thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Uses their time effectively
  • Is well organized and can report quickly and concisely on their activities
 
Your job will be to
 
  • Develop and fully execute publicity, promotional and marketing plans and remain on budget
  • Write press releases and compile media kits
  • Develop advertising plans, negotiate for ad space, write advertising copy, and give feedback to design
  • Create, deliver, and follow up on media pitches
  • Forge, develop and maintain relationships with key players in the media, with related organizations, and the book publishing industry
  • Monitor the media across various platforms including print, broadcast, digital and new media
  • Plan and promote author events, such as library talks and signings
  • Develop a social media following
  • Share in the responsibility of office administrative tasks
 
Education and Experience
 
  • Post-secondary education in journalism, communications or the social sciences
  • Previous experience with the media


We’re looking for a candidate who is in mid-career, and is looking for an opportunity to play a key role in contributing to public debate and discussion in Canada. Recent books we have published — like Arthur Manuel’s Reconciliation Manifesto, Black Cop by Calvin Lawrence, The Age of Increasing Inequality by Lars Osberg, and Getting to Zero by Tony Clarke provide a sample of the types of books you will be promoting.
