Position Summary
 
The editor will lead the editorial direction and provide the project management that is required to maintain our publications’ reputation as the leading sources of information for the Canadian potato industry and global seed industry. This will include writing feature stories and managing both staff writers as well as freelance writers in the execution of content for both print and digital channels for one to two media properties. Experience in agriculture and journalism with an aptitude for strategic thinking and idea development would be strong assets for this position.
 
Essential Functions
 
  • The ideal candidate will be able to perform the following key roles and tasks:
  • Oversee development of content for print, social media, audio/video and digital channels
  • Ensure the publications’ content offerings stand out in an increasingly fragmented and competitive information universe
  • Maintain an understanding and knowledge of the key issues facing business professionals and farmers in these industries
  • Develop a content schedule to deliver regular articles for both the web and print publications
  • Proven ability to write feature stories in a lively and engaging journalistic voice
  • Collect and edit content for website articles and newsletters under tight deadlines
  • Developing webinar topics, liaising with speakers and hosting webinar events
  • Partner with the marketing team to build and maintain relevance on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media platforms as appropriate
  • Work directly with the editorial team, project managers, business development team, production team, digital team and design team in the production of the publications and related tools
  • Meet with other department heads on a regular basis to improve communications and work flows
  • Identify and recruit appropriate thought leaders for the media properties’ editorial advisory boards
  • Liaise with editorial advisory board members, stakeholders and industry leaders as needed
  • Attend industry events, conferences and tradeshows as needed
  • Maintain up-to-date familiarity with Canadian Press and Associated Press style guidelines
  • Write articles for our other media properties
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications

Education and Experience
 
  • A degree in communications, journalism and/or agriculture, or demonstrable equivalent in experience is required
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in a media capacity
  • Additional media and/or agriculture education or experience is an asset
 
Knowledge and Skills
 
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people, including sources, internal staff and industry leaders
  • Must be able to identify key industry issues and create thought-provoking questions to draw out information
  • Commitment to an enjoyable, positive and successful work environment
  • Must be well organized
  • The ability to work under tight deadlines
  • Must be able to handle pressure well
