Salary: $45,000 to $47,000
The successful candidate will be responsible for producing news stories and other feature content from Inuvik and the surrounding region, including photo features, a weekly editorial and breaking news stories for our website at nnsl.com and the weekly Inuvik Drum and News/North newspapers. These stories and features will reflect issues of concern and interest for readers in Inuvik but also the Beaufort Delta and will also be of general interest to readers in the Northwest Territories. Stories will include those focusing on crime, town council, education and government but with a particular interest in Indigenous issues in the area. We are also very interested in community news, with an emphasis on photography. Great interpersonal skills are a must. WordPress, InDesign, Photoshop and video knowledge is definitely a plus.
The position requires a person who can work independently with minimal direction and who can meet weekly production deadlines for the Inuvik Drum. It is also important to produce breaking news on the website when it occurs. The reporter will be asked to periodically visit outlying communities to gather news and features.
The position is based in Inuvik, and includes PAID accommodations and utilities, plus a vehicle. NNSL Media will cover your transportation costs to Yellowknife and other reasonable related expenses.
The successful candidate will have:
- Experience reporting for digital platforms and in print.
- Proficiency in news and feature writing and knowledge of Canadian Press guidelines.
- Photography skills and a decent camera (NNSL Media may purchase a camera for the successful candidate to be paid back in monthly installments).
- Experience using content management systems.
- A valid driver's licence and smartphone.
