Terrace Standard (Black Press Media)
Location: Terrace, British Columbia
Posted: May 25, 2018
The Terrace Standard, a trusted, award-winning weekly in Northwest B.C., has an immediate opening for a full-time multi-media journalist.
The Terrace Standard is part of Black Press Media, Canada’s largest private, independent newspaper company in the midst of a massive digital push to become a news leader in the modern media landscape.
The small-town newsroom is not the isolating experience it once was. While our strength and priority is local coverage, we partner with other Black Press papers regularly to produce pieces of regional interest, and keep an open dialogue through live chat with the network of Black Press newsrooms throughout B.C., sharing leads, input and stories of provincial interest.
Terrace is the main hub of Northwest BC. There is every crosscurrent imaginable in industry, sports and recreation, the arts and culture. The big draw here is the Skeena River and the salmon fishing, followed by hiking, mountain biking and skiing. Our mountain was recently named as one of the world’s Top 10 ski destinations by a UK magazine for it’s no-frills attitude and accessible backcountry thrills.
Historically Terrace was a logging and industry town, and while that remains a cornerstone the demographic is shifting significantly with the 25-35-year old crowd. They're moving here for the lifestyle and working remotely in new economies, or tapping into local ventures as entrepreneurs. It’s a dynamic town with a lot of stories.
A vehicle is required for this position.
The ideal candidate is a curious, succinct writer with the ability to balance daily deadlines in a competitive online market with the demands of a weekly print edition.
Strong photography and videography skills will bring your name to the top of the list, along with a good grasp of social media best practices. Experience with Photoshop, Indesign and Final Cut Pro are big assets.
What we want from you:
- A minimum of two stories per day and a clean writing style that can be applied to a range of subjects.
- Two videos per week that compliment your written pieces.
- You will be responsible for a small sports section of about three stories per week, but the bulk of your work will be in general news.
- If there’s a subject you feel deserves further exploration, we’re very features friendly—we’ll give your story space on the page and apply our best design talents to make it shine.
Please submit a resume, writing samples, links to photos and videos, and a cover letter - stating you found this job on Jeff Gaulin's Journalism Job Board - to:
