Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) administers the Professional Engineers Act to serve and protect the public interest by licensing Ontario’s 80,000 professional engineers and setting standards for and regulating the engineering profession in the province.

PEO has an immediate opening for the position of Assistant Editor, Engineering Dimensions. Reporting to the Editor, Engineering Dimensions, this position is responsible for writing, copy editing, researching, fact checking, and proofreading Engineering Dimensions articles and other PEO printed materials. Providing support to magazine administration and digital publishing activities, including digital content management, database management, subscription fulfillment and general clerical duties.

The major responsibilities of the position include:
researches and writes news and occasional feature articles for Engineering Dimensions, as required;
coordinates and copy edits Gazette, Awards, In Memoriam, Date pad, Introduction to PEO
Council, and Letters sections for Engineering Dimensions;
compiles annual subject and author indexes for Engineering Dimensions;
copy edits, proofreads and fact checks all magazine content during production cycle, and ensures it matches PEO’s editorial style guide;
produces link guide for magazine’s digital edition;
works with editor and associate editor to brainstorm issue themes for editorial calendar and generate article ideas;
brainstorms cover and feature design treatments with Engineering Dimensions team and graphics department;
produces summaries of Engineering Dimensions articles of interest/concern to staff;
attends press conferences, seminars/conventions and other events, to report for Engineering Dimensions and to keep current on developments in the engineering
profession;
uploads, proofreads and maintains digital content for the Engineering Dimensions microsite and PEO website; and
maintains promotional and subscription databases for Engineering Dimensions, and produces mailing labels and files for each issue.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have an undergraduate degree in journalism, corporate communications or equivalent relevant field. Minimum two (2) years of demonstrated professional editorial experience along with the following knowledge and abilities: strong writing, copy editing skills combined with excellent planning and organizational abilities; proficiency in writing and assembling interesting and informative news articles with an exceptional ability in copywriting, fact checking and proofreading; ability to work independently under pressure to tight deadlines with meticulous attention to detail; experience with content management systems (WordPress, Prism, etc.) and demonstrated photography skills; exceptional customer service skills and good command of Microsoft Office package; and professional demeanor and ability to represent PEO appropriately, internally and externally.
