The Conversation seeks a Commissioning Editor to join a team of journalists working with academics to channel informed news analysis and commentary direct to the public. This is a role for an experienced journalist to work on a new Canadian edition of the globally successful non-profit academic journalism site, The Conversation (theconversation.com/ca).
You will be expected to commission content quickly and accurately, working with experts who often have built up knowledge of their specialist subject over a period of decades. The ideal candidate would be able to lead coverage of at least one of the following areas: arts and culture; business and economy; health and medicine; politics and society. This is a job that requires editors to be able to work independently, as well as part of a dynamic team.
This job is for an initial full-time one-year contract based in Toronto, with the strong intent of an on-going term subject to funding.

Reporting to the Editor, the Commissioning Editor will develop story ideas on a daily basis, commission articles from academics and researchers, and prepare those articles for publication. The successful applicant will be widely read and be comfortable working in a fast paced, daily news environment. Some travel is expected to make presentations and to lead writing workshops for academic researchers.
This role would suit a journalist with at least five years’ experience of reporting and editing experience, demonstrated experience of editing, strong communication skills and the ability to manage relationships with key institutions and scholars. An interest in turning academic research into compelling stories is a must, as is a commitment to work as part of a collaborative team. Experience in digital news production and social media is a bonus, as an understanding of the higher education landscape in Canada.
The Commissioning Editor will demonstrate the following:
- At least 5 years’ experience in of reporting and editing experience in a fast-moving, daily news environment
- In-depth knowledge of at least one of the following areas: arts and culture; business and economy; health and medicine; politics and society
- Proven ability to generate creative and compelling story ideas to complement the daily news agenda
- An extensive network of academic contacts
- Strong organizational skills, ability to write to a daily deadline, manage multiple tasks and work as part of a collaborative team
- Care and attention to detail
- Bilingualism an asset
The Conversation Canada will have editorial operations in Toronto and Vancouver.
