The Mountaineer is looking for an energetic community-minded
reporter with a passion for writing accurate and engaging stories.

We are an award-winning newspaper based in Rocky Mountain
House, Alberta, that covers a population of approximately 20,000 people.

The reporter will be responsible for all Town of Rocky news,
including regular council meetings usually held the first and third Tuesdays of
the month, provincial court, and the Caroline Village council. The town
reporter is also responsible for covering the Rocky and District Chamber of
Commerce activities.

Community happenings keep our three-person newsroom very busy. Other regular assignments
include agriculture news, outdoor life, school news, court, sports, industry,
environment, entertainment and provincial politics. The reporter will write a
monthly opinion column, and complete other assignments as given.

We pride ourselves on publishing a comprehensive newspaper
every week, including breaking news, in-depth stories and human interest
features. Reporters who demonstrate positive attitude and competence will find
opportunity to expand their writing skills and pursue a variety of stories. The position comes with a comprehensive benefits package after three months of employment, and two weeks of paid annual leave after one full year of employment.


All Mountaineer reporters must ...
...have a journalism diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution.  

...be able to research, conduct interviews and write engaging news and feature stories.

...be able to complete assignments accurately and on deadline. 

...demonstrate strong photography skills. Reporters take their own photos to accompany their work. Cameras are supplied.

...adhere to CP style conventions.

...be able to use a phone book, dictionary, map and telephone.

...have a valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle.

...look professional at work and on all work assignments.

...behave in a respectful manner and adhere to sound journalism ethics and the Alberta Press Council’s Code of Practice. 

The Mountaineer is a member of the Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association and a three-time winner of the National Better Newspaper Competition.
